FACT: Trust /
Rafter mounted Radiant Barriers provides BETTER OVERALL PERFORMANCE by
reducing conduction thru the trust / rafters and roof decking .
FACT:
Silver Shield is a Multi-layer radiant barrier. The layers expand to
form a reflective air space. Of the various methods of installing a
radiant barrier, installation to the bottom of the top cord of the roof
trust / rafters will yield the BEST
PERFORMANCE.

Silver Shield
Hi-Perm is a multi-layer radiant barrier. The inside
layer is metalized PVC. The outer layer is
.000285" aluminum foil
laminated with a fire retardant adhesive to 30 lb. natural kraft, and
is reinforced
with a tri-directional fiberglass and polyester scrim.
Silver Shield is intended for use on the underside
roof rafters, and
can be used in ceiling and wall / floor applications where additional
radiant
heat
protection is desired. Excellent for installations between roof
trust systems of 16" & 24" .
Silver
Shield Radiant Barrier System
Stops 97 % of Radiant Heat.
An attic offers
excellent potential for use of radiant barrier systems: First, because
the roof is the surface most exposed to
solar radiation, and second, because most of the solar gain
absorbed by the roof is transmitted down to the attic floor by
radiation. Since the attic airspace separates the hot roof
surface from the ceiling, no heat will move down by conduction, and
the heat will not convect down from the hot roof to the ceiling
because heated air rises. If you place a radiant barrier (layer of
foil) in the airspace between the hot roof deck and the cooler
attic floor (insulation), you can eliminate almost all radiant heat
transfer.
THE PROBLEM
- Solar
radiation causes roof temperatures to reach 160 o to 190 o F.
- Heat is
conducted through roofing materials and radiated to the ceiling below.
- Attic
air temperatures climb to superheated levels...typically 140 o F in the
summer.
- Ceiling
insulation R-values are rated at 75 degrees and 50% relative humidity,
as temperatures and humidity levels increase, R-values diminish.
- Radiant
heat transfers into air conditioning ducts increasing energy costs.
- Attic
structure and contents saturate and continue to transfer heat even
after the sun has set.
- A/C run
time increases and in peak loads cannot maintain internal temperature
set points - comfort is compromised.
- Air
quality is compromised - hot humid air is drawn through leaks in the
duct system.
THE
SOLUTION
Silver
Shield Radiant Barrier System
- Reduces
radiant heat transfer up to 97%. Treats the problem at its
source ----- the roof.
- Significantly
reduces attic temperatures up to 30 degrees.
- Increases
insulation and air conditioning duct efficiency.
- Lowers
temperatures and improves comfort in areas that are not typically air
conditioned, such as garages and lanais.
- Qualifies
for Florida Energy Code Credits.
- Energy
Star Rating helps to qualify for energy efficient mortgages.
Of the three methods, installing a
radiant barrier to the bottom of the top cord is the most effective for
reducing radiant heat transfer. This
installation method yields a 15% to 20% performance improvement.
In addition, the top cord installation method
reduces material costs especially in hip roof configurations.
- Radiant
barriers are great for bonus rooms and other problem areas for cooling
design.
- Installing
radiant barriers in garages, lanais, and gable ends improves overall
performance and comfort in building design.
- Radiant
barriers will not harm roofing materials including shingles.
MULTI LAYER WALL INSULATION

VR
Plus is
a multi-layer reflective insulation that is not only for new
construction applications, but
also allows for retrofit on current housing. This unique
insulation has expanding layers that separate
paper from foil creating three reflective air spaces, which
creates unsurpassed insulation with
R-Values of 5.2 to 7.1.

Background
Concrete masonry homes are less expensive to heat and cool
than insulated wood frame homes. Much of this energy efficiency is
attributed to the mass of a concrete wall. In Florida, a concrete wall
takes advantage of differences in night and day temperature by
responding to changes very slowly. As a result, less energy is required
to maintain a comfortable constant temperature inside your home. It may
take 4 to 8 hours for a temperature change to migrate through the mass
of an insulated con-crete block wall and only about 1 hour for an
insulated wood frame wall. For example, a wood frame construction in
Tampa must have three times the R-Value than is required for a masonry
home."

|
Masonry
Walls have built-in insulation
- Reduce
heat gain and loss with mass
- Small
portion of overall load - 7% (see pie chart)
- Masonry
Wall with an R-4 added insulation is equivalent to an R-13
frame wall
- Invested
energy dollar is better spent on higher load areas in the
structure such as roof systems, windows, infiltration, and mechanical
systems
|
Solution
- VR Plus Shield achieves an R-7.1 on 1-1/2" furring for
higher requirements
- Achieves R-value requirement at lowest cost
- Also serves as an infiltration and vapor barrier
- Safe for the Environment - no ozone or greenhouse gases
- Stable R-value - no gases to leak out or mass to hold
moisture
- Meets Florida Energy Code
- Energy Star Rating SBCCI & Dade County
Compliance
- Millions of square feet installed
